SSB Head Constable & SI – Exam pattern, syllabus & sample papers

The exam pattern for the post of SI & HC is prescribed by SSB; There will be six stages in the selection process; some of them having marks for each task and some are of qualifying nature . Candidates should give their best performance in every stage of the selection process .

Selection Process

1. First Stage ( document verification )

First of all candidates will be called for document verification; Candidates will be informed by a call letter or admit card personally . Candidates have to appear at the recruitment center at the given time and date . Generally SSB will call the candidates on their units in different states . You have to bring all the original documents with you; It is a very simple process and will be over in just 2-3 hours .

2. Second Stage ( PHYSICAL STANDARD TEST )

Now the candidates will be forwarded to the stage which is a PST ( PHYSICAL STANDARD TEST ); Candidates should look the PS for their posts in this article .

3. Third Stage ( PET )

Here PET means ‘ Physical Efficiency Test’ which conducted by SSB at the third stage of the selection process . Ex-serviceman  do not have to pass through this stage .

PET will be conducted by SSB in the following way -

For Male (HC & SI ) – 100 meter race to be completed in 16 seconds, 800 meters race in 4 min., a long jump of 11ft. and a high jump of 3 ft. 6 inch.

For Female ( SI ) - 100 meter race to be completed in 20 seconds, 800 meters race in 5 min., a long jump of 9 ft. and a high jump of 3 ft.

4. Fourth Stage ( Written Exam )

The written examination will be conducted for physical qualified candidates only; Candidates will be called for a written examination on the same day at various examination centers . For all the these posts ( SI & HC ), written examination will be conducted for 2 hours and there will be same 100 marks .

There will be 3 parts in the question paper -

  • General English/ Hindi – 25 marks
  • G.K. – 25 marks
  • Specific Trade Subject  -  50 marks

5. Fifth Stage ( Technical Test )

If you are above cut off marks of this recruitment ( In the written examination ) then you are qualified to sit in the technical test; Details of technical posts for different posts is given below -

Sub-Inspector ( Pioneer )

There are two parts of this technical test -

Viva – Voce – 10 marks & Practical test – 40 marks

Questions and other practical project will be based on Civil Engineering subjects .

Head Constable ( Electrician )

There will be a skill test of 50 marks out of which 25 marks will be given through viva- voce and 25 marks from a practical test .  All  is based upon Electrician trade subjects .

Head Constable ( Workshop)

The same is here; There will be total 50 marks in the test . 25 marks for viva- voce and 25 marks for practical test in the Automobile / Mechanical Engineering subjects .

6. Sixth & Last Stage ( Medical Examination )

The last stage of the recruitment process is a medical examination; Candidates, shortlisted in the written examination will be called for a detailed medical examination . The number of candidates may be up to three times of the current vacancies .

At last a final merit list will be prepared by the selection board of SSB according to your performance in the written examination and technical test .  These, finally selected candidates will be allotted a appointment letter with 45 days from the result declaration date .

As we know that the written examination is the main stage of the selection process and if we do not perform very well in the written examination then there are very rare chances of selection even if you have qualified for the next stage . As the final merit list will be totally based upon your performance in the written examination so we will discuss the written examination pattern for each post in detail .

For all the posts, there will be a question paper of 100 marks and you have to achieve them in just 2 hours .

For SI ( Sub-Inspector) Pioneer

General Knowledge ( G.K. )   –   25 marks

General English or Hindi    -    25 marks

Civil Engineering based questions   –  50 marks

For Head Constable ( HC ) Workshop

General Knowledge ( G.K. )   –   25 marks

General English or Hindi    -    25 marks

Automobile/ Mech. Engg. based questions   –  50 marks

For Head constable ( HC ) Electrician 

General Knowledge ( G.K. )   –   25 marks

General English or Hindi    -    25 marks

Electrician Trade based questions   –  50 marks

It’a difficult to provide you the right specific question papers for the above technical posts of SI and head constable . There is mush more stuff available on the internet about G.K. and English .

  • You can pick any book which is for the post of HC & SI and you may prepare G.K. and English from there . And the trade subjects cab be studied in your academic books .
  • You can buy a book from the market .

Now you may design your own question papers for the above posts according to written examination .
